What is Habitat?
Habitat for Humanity is a non-profit, ecumenical Christian housing ministry. Its mission is to build simple, decent, affordable communities in partnership with all God's people.
The goal is to end substandard housing. This is being accomplished house by house, building houses using privately donated funds and volunteer labor.
We sell the homes at our cost with no-interest mortgages to families who have qualified for the program. Principal payments are used to build more homes.Founded in 1985, Habitat for Humanity of Coastal Fairfield County has built more than 100 homes in the Greater Bridgeport area by challenging individuals, congregations, businesses and other organizations to lend a hand up - not a hand out - to those in need of better housing. It is an independently operated affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International.
We begin the construction of a new home by staging a "Blitz Build" event, where we work in cooperation with our other partners in the Sound Coalition (below).

What is a Blitz Build?
A Blitz Build is a concentrated and sustained effort to get the main construction tasks accomplished: foundations, framing, roofing and utilities. It involves a considerable amount of effort from professionals and volunteers alike.
Think of it as the launching off the runway of a new dwelling for a deserving family. The family itself participates in the Blitz Build effort, and they stay engaged in the building process throughout the entire construction period.

In 2007, our Blitz Build took place between July 30th and August 4th. We worked at 1235 Kossuth Street in Bridgeport. In addition, we teamed up with best-selling author, Luanne Rice. With Ms. Rice, we raised the walls in a build earlier in July to promote her new book "What Matters Most" (released July 17th, 2007).
Ms. Rice is a supporter of Habitat Women's Builds and she - along with her publisher, Bantam Dell - donated $1.00 for each book sold (up to $25,000 to Habitat for Humanity International).
You can visit her website here.
This year we also had several refugees working with us. Lieselot Whitbeck recently helped them to settle here. They have building experience but need help finding employment. We hope that this Habitat experience helped them to learn how building is done in the United States. |

The Sound Coalition
Who is the Sound Coalition?
The Sound Coalition is comprised of four Congregational (United Church of Christ) churches in the Greater Bridgeport area that build houses in cooperation with Habitat for Humanity of Coastal Fairfield County.
The Sound Coalition consists of the following four churches:
How Does the Sound Coalition Work?
Each church seeks volunteers from their congregation. During the house raising Blitz Build week, volunteers come out during the week to lift the walls into place, put the floor joists in, and put the roof on. After the blitz week, each congregation works one Saturday a month until the house is complete. |
